Why the Sunrise Izumo Is Worth Booking

The Sunrise Izumo (サンライズ出雲) is one of Japan's last two regular overnight sleeper trains, and for many travelers it represents a bucket-list railway experience. Departing Tokyo Station at 21:50 every night, it arrives at Izumo-shi Station the next morning at 9:58 — roughly 12 hours of travel that replaces both a hotel night and a transit day.

What makes this train special goes beyond nostalgia. You fall asleep watching the lights of suburban Tokyo fade, wake to sunrise over the Seto Inland Sea, and step off the train ready to explore Shimane Prefecture. For travelers heading to Izumo Taisha or the wider San'in coast, it is the most time-efficient option from Tokyo. This is one of the Shimane train travel options that turns the journey itself into a highlight.

The train runs coupled with the Sunrise Seto (bound for Takamatsu) as far as Okayama, where the two halves split and continue to their separate destinations.

Cabin Types and What They Cost

The Sunrise Izumo offers five cabin categories. All prices below are the berth ticket (寝台券) charge — you pay this on top of the base fare and limited express fee (covered by JR Pass, see below).

Nobi-Nobi Seat (Budget Floor Space)

The nobi-nobi seat (ノビノビ座席) is not a seat at all. It is a carpeted, open-plan sleeping area where each passenger gets roughly a tatami mat's worth of floor space with a small partition for privacy. There are no blankets provided — bring a travel blanket or sleeping bag liner.

The reservation fee is just ¥530 (~$4), making this by far the cheapest option. During peak periods the fee rises by ¥200; during off-peak it drops by ¥200. The trade-off is shared space with dim (but not fully dark) lighting. Earplugs and an eye mask are essential.

B Solo and B Single (Private Compartments)

B Solo (Bソロ) rooms are the most compact private option — a narrow bed with a door that locks and a small shelf for belongings. At ¥6,600 (~$44) for the berth ticket, this is the most affordable private cabin.

B Single (Bシングル) rooms are slightly larger with more headroom. The berth ticket is ¥7,700 (~$51). Both Solo and Single rooms have power outlets and reading lights. Luggage space is limited, so pack light.

A Single Deluxe and Twin Options

A Single Deluxe (Aシングルデラックス) is the top tier for solo travelers. At ¥14,180 (~$95) for the berth ticket, you get a proper bed, desk, washbasin, and a free shower card. This is the only cabin type where shower access is included.

For couples or friends, B Sunrise Twin rooms cost ¥15,400 (~$103) total for two passengers. B Single Twin rooms offer two separate beds for ¥15,000 (~$100) for two, or ¥9,600 (~$64) for single occupancy.

Cabin Type Berth Ticket Key Features
Nobi-Nobi Seat ¥530 (~$4) Carpeted floor space, shared, budget option
B Solo ¥6,600 (~$44) Smallest private room, lockable door
B Single ¥7,700 (~$51) Slightly larger private room
A Single Deluxe ¥14,180 (~$95) Desk, sink, free shower card
B Sunrise Twin ¥15,400 (~$103) Twin room for 2 passengers
B Single Twin ¥15,000/¥9,600 (~$100/$64) 2 beds, bookable for 1 or 2

How to Book: The 10 AM Strategy

Reservations open exactly one month before the departure date at 10:00 AM JST. Private cabins — especially Solo and Single rooms — sell out within minutes on popular dates. This is not an exaggeration.

Booking must be done at a Midori no Madoguchi (みどりの窓口), the JR ticket counter found at major stations. According to JR West's official site, reservations can also be made at designated ticket machines (指定席券売機). Online booking through standard JR reservation systems is not available for this train.

Many visitors on Reddit recommend the following approach:

  • Arrive at a Midori no Madoguchi counter before 10:00 AM on the day reservations open
  • Have your preferred cabin type, date, and a backup cabin option written down (ideally in Japanese)
  • Be ready to accept nobi-nobi as a fallback if all private rooms are gone

Peak booking competition occurs during Golden Week (late April-early May), Obon (mid-August), year-end/New Year holidays, and summer vacation. Midweek departures are generally easier to secure.

The Overnight Experience

What to Expect Onboard

The train departs from Tokyo Station, typically from Platform 9 or 10. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to find your car and settle in. A yukata (浴衣), a light cotton robe, and slippers are provided in private cabins for wearing onboard.

The train is quiet. After lights dim around 23:00, passengers in all cabin types are expected to keep noise to a minimum. The gentle rocking of the train makes sleeping surprisingly easy for most travelers.

The highlight comes around 6:00 AM as the train passes along the Seto Inland Sea coast. If you have an east-facing room, the sunrise view is one of the journey's most memorable moments. The train splits from the Sunrise Seto at Okayama Station around 6:27 AM, then continues west through Shimane.

Showers and Amenities

The train has a shared shower room available to all passengers. A Single Deluxe guests receive a complimentary shower card. Everyone else can purchase a shower card for ¥330 (~$2) from a vending machine near the shower room. According to JR Central's official page, each card provides approximately 6 minutes of hot water (you can pause and restart).

Shower cards sell out quickly after departure — buy yours as soon as you board if you want a morning shower. There is no dining car or food service onboard, so stock up on bento, snacks, and drinks at Tokyo Station before departure. The station's underground food halls close around 21:30, so shop with time to spare.

JR Pass Coverage and Ticket Structure

The Sunrise Izumo ticket has three components:

  1. Base fare (乗車券): Tokyo to Izumo-shi
  2. Limited express fee (特急券): for riding the express service
  3. Berth ticket (寝台券): for the cabin type you choose (except nobi-nobi, which uses a reservation fee instead)

If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, the base fare and limited express fee are covered. For nobi-nobi seats, you only pay the ¥530 reservation fee — making this one of the best JR Pass value plays available.

For private cabins, the JR Pass still covers the base fare and express fee, but you must pay the berth ticket out of pocket. An A Single Deluxe with JR Pass coverage effectively costs just ¥14,180 for a night of accommodation plus 12 hours of transit — competitive with a Tokyo hotel plus shinkansen ticket.

What You Pay JR Pass Holder No JR Pass
Base fare Covered ~¥11,660
Limited express fee Covered ~¥3,300
Nobi-nobi reservation ¥530 ¥530
B Solo berth ¥6,600 ¥6,600
A Single Deluxe berth ¥14,180 ¥14,180

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my JR Pass on the Sunrise Izumo?
Yes. The JR Pass covers the base fare and limited express fee. For nobi-nobi seats, you pay only a ¥530 (~$4) reservation fee. For private cabins, you pay the berth ticket (¥6,600-¥14,180 depending on cabin type) out of pocket, but the base fare and express fee are still covered by the pass.
How far in advance should I book a private cabin?
Exactly one month before departure at 10:00 AM JST, at a Midori no Madoguchi (みどりの窓口) counter. Solo and Single rooms sell out within minutes on popular dates. Have your preferred cabin type and a backup option ready. Midweek departures are easier to secure than weekends or holiday periods.
Is the nobi-nobi seat comfortable enough for a full night?
It is a carpeted floor space roughly the size of a tatami mat — not a reclining seat. There are small partitions between spaces but no walls or doors. Lighting stays dim but not fully dark. Bring earplugs, an eye mask, and a travel blanket. Budget travelers generally find it acceptable, but the jump to a B Solo room at ¥6,600 (~$44) is significant in comfort.
How does the onboard shower work?
A Single Deluxe guests receive a free shower card. All other passengers can buy a card for ¥330 (~$2) from a vending machine near the shower room. Each card provides about 6 minutes of hot water that you can pause and restart. Cards sell out quickly after departure, so purchase yours as soon as you board.
What time does the Sunrise Izumo depart and arrive?
The train departs Tokyo Station at 21:50 every night and arrives at Izumo-shi Station at 9:58 the next morning — approximately 12 hours. It runs daily year-round, though booking difficulty increases significantly during Golden Week, Obon, and New Year holidays.
