The Sunrise Izumo: Japan's Last Overnight Sleeper

The Sunrise Izumo (サンライズ出雲) is a shindai tokkyu (寝台特急, sleeper limited express) — the last of its kind in Japan's regular rail service. If the Sunrise Izumo is sold out or you prefer daytime travel, the standard route to Shimane runs through Okayama Station — the interchange between the Sanyo Shinkansen and the JR Yakumo limited express.

From Tokyo via Okayama

Take the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen from Tokyo to Okayama (approximately 3.5 hours by Nozomi, or ~4 hours by Hikari). At Okayama, transfer to the JR Yakumo limited express to Matsue (approximately 3.5 hours). Total journey: roughly 6.5-7 hours. From Hiroshima

Rail Passes for Shimane Travel

Nationwide JR Pass

The full Japan Rail Pass covers the base fare on the Sunrise Izumo, the Shinkansen to Okayama, and the Yakumo limited express — making it the most cost-effective option if you are traveling widely across Japan. However, the JR Pass covers only the base fare on the Sunrise Izumo, not the sleeper accommodation supplement. The exception is Nobi Nobi seats, which require no supplement — making them essentially free with a JR Pass.

Note that the Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen services are not covered by the JR Pass. You must use Hikari or Kodama services to Okayama, which adds approximately 30 minutes to the journey.

San'in-Okayama Area Pass

According to JR West, the San'in-Okayama Area Pass costs ¥12,000 for adults and covers 5 consecutive days of unlimited travel on the JR Yakumo, San'in Main Line local trains, and other JR West services within the covered area. Okayama is the critical interchange. Whether you arrive by Shinkansen from the south or by Sunrise Izumo from the east, Okayama is where all rail routes to Shimane converge before heading north on the Yakumo or continuing on the San'in Main Line.

Matsue is Shimane's capital and the main station for the Yakumo. If your destination is Izumo Taisha, continue one more stop to Izumoshi.
