Where Beppu Fits in a Kyushu Itinerary

Beppu (別府) sits on Kyushu's northeastern coast, roughly 2 hours by limited express from Fukuoka and 3.5 hours from Kumamoto. It is one of the most transit-connected cities on the island — served by JR limited express trains, highway buses from multiple cities, an airport shuttle, and even an overnight ferry from Osaka. For most Kyushu itineraries, Beppu works as either a midway stop on an east coast loop or a destination paired with nearby Yufuin.

The city itself is built around its geothermal activity. The jigoku (地獄, "hells") — colorful boiling pools and steam vents — are the main tourist draw, and the Kannawa (鉄輪) district is a working onsen neighborhood where steam rises from the streets. For details on what to do once you arrive, see our Beppu onsen guide. This article focuses on how to get there, how long to stay, and how Beppu connects to the rest of a Kyushu trip. Beppu is part of our Oita onsen town guides.

Getting to Beppu: Key Routes and Times

From Fukuoka (Hakata) by Train

The JR Sonic Limited Express runs from Hakata Station to Beppu Station in approximately 2 hours. The estimated base fare is around ¥7,000 (~$47) one way. Trains depart roughly hourly throughout the day. Seat reservations are recommended during peak periods — visitors report standing-room-only conditions on busy weekends.

This route is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. If you are using a rail pass, this is the most cost-effective route.

From Fukuoka Airport by Bus

Direct highway buses run from Fukuoka Airport to Beppu, taking 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. Buses depart roughly every 30-60 minutes from morning through late evening. No transfer is needed, making this the simplest option for travelers flying into Fukuoka.

From Kumamoto: Three Route Options

Kumamoto to Beppu is where routing gets interesting. There are three distinct options:

Route Duration Cost Notes
JR Hohi Line direct 3.5 hours ~¥6,000 (~$40) Direct limited express, scenic mountain route. Covered by JR Pass
Shinkansen via Kokura 2.5 hours ~¥13,000 (~$87) Faster but more expensive. Requires transfer at Kokura
Kyushu Odan Bus via Aso 5 hours ~¥6,000 (~$40) Scenic route through Aso and Kurokawa Onsen. Book via Willer or Japan Bus Online

The JR Hohi Line is the most practical option for rail pass holders. The cross-island bus is slower but passes through volcanic Aso caldera and the popular Kurokawa Onsen — worth considering if you want sightseeing built into the journey.

A common mistake is trying to route from Miyazaki to Beppu by train — this requires backtracking through Fukuoka and is highly inefficient. If coming from southern Kyushu, plan your route via Kumamoto instead.

From Osaka by Ferry

The MOL Sunflower ferry operates overnight service from Osaka to Beppu. The newly built Sunflower Kurenai and Murasaki vessels combine transportation and accommodation — you board in the evening and arrive in Beppu the next morning. This saves a night's hotel cost and a day of travel time. Check the official MOL Sunflower website for current pricing and booking.

Beppu to Yufuin: Combining Two Onsen Towns

Yufuin (湯布院) is a mountain onsen town about 30-45 minutes from Beppu by bus. The two are frequently combined in itineraries, and the Kamenoi Bus Wide Pass (¥1,800 for 1 day, ¥2,800 for 2 days) covers both towns.

Visiting both in a single day is technically possible but rushed — you would spend most of your time on buses. A better approach is to base yourself in Beppu for two nights, taking a half-day trip to Yufuin on one of them. Alternatively, stay one night in each town and use the bus to move between them.

Yufuin has a different character than Beppu — quieter, more boutique-oriented, with a main shopping street (Yunotsubo-kaido) leading to a picturesque lake. If Beppu is the working onsen city, Yufuin is the curated retreat.

How Many Days to Spend in Beppu

Two days is the sweet spot for most travelers. Here is how the time typically breaks down:

  • Day 1: Jigoku (hells) tour in the morning, Kannawa district walking and public baths in the afternoon, ryokan dinner and evening soak
  • Day 2: Beppu Ropeway (connects 500m to 1,300m elevation — the largest gondolas in Kyushu, per the Oita Tourism site), half-day Yufuin trip, or deeper exploration of Beppu's best public baths

A single overnight works as a tighter schedule, but two days lets you experience the different onsen districts without rushing between attractions. Three days is justified if you want to include Yufuin as a full day trip and still have unhurried time in Beppu.

For details on what to prioritize during your stay, see our Beppu onsen guide.

Getting Around Beppu Without a Car

City Buses and Day Passes

Beppu's main bus operator is Kamenoi Bus, with routes connecting Beppu Station to the Kannawa onsen district (~15-20 minutes, ¥210-230), the jigoku hells area, and other attractions. Oita Kotsu buses serve Takasakiyama Monkey Park, Umitamago Aquarium, and Oita Airport.

Single rides cost ¥210-260 depending on distance. Buses run every 15-20 minutes during the day, with reduced service after 8 p.m.

According to japan-guide.com, the Kamenoi Bus day pass costs ¥1,100 for central Beppu or ¥1,700 for a 2-day pass. If you plan to visit the jigoku hells and Kannawa district in one day, the day pass pays for itself in 4-5 rides.

A SUGOCA IC card (Kyushu's equivalent of Suica) works on both bus systems and saves time on ticketing.

Beppu Station: Luggage Storage and Tips

According to the Oita Tourism site, Beppu Station has coin lockers and a luggage storage service. Some ryokan also offer same-day luggage delivery from the station — check at booking time if this service is available.

The Kitahama Bus Terminal (北浜バスターミナル) is a 5-10 minute walk from Beppu Station and serves highway buses and airport shuttles. If you are arriving by highway bus rather than train, this is where you will be dropped off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days should I spend in Beppu on a Kyushu trip?
Two days is ideal for most travelers. The first day covers the jigoku hells tour and Kannawa district public baths. A second day allows for the Beppu Ropeway, a half-day Yufuin trip, or deeper exploration of Beppu's onsen neighborhoods. A single overnight works but feels rushed.
Can I visit Beppu and Yufuin on the same day?
Technically yes, but you will spend a significant portion of the day on buses (30-45 minutes each way). A better approach is to base yourself in Beppu and take a half-day trip to Yufuin, or stay one night in each town. The Kamenoi Bus Wide Pass (¥1,800/day) covers both.
Is a Kyushu Rail Pass worth it if Beppu is my main destination?
If you are doing a Fukuoka-Beppu round trip plus one additional city like Kumamoto, the 3-day Northern Kyushu Pass easily pays for itself. For a Beppu-only trip from Fukuoka, individual Sonic Limited Express tickets may be cheaper. Compare pass costs against your planned routes.
What is the best way from Fukuoka Airport directly to Beppu?
Take the direct highway bus from Fukuoka Airport to Beppu, which runs every 30-60 minutes and takes 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. No transfer is required. This is simpler than taking a train, which requires getting to Hakata Station first.
Can I get from Kumamoto to Beppu without backtracking to Fukuoka?
Yes. The JR Hohi Line runs a direct limited express across the island in 3.5 hours for approximately ¥6,000 (~$40), covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Alternatively, the Kyushu Odan Bus takes 5 hours but passes through Aso caldera and Kurokawa Onsen — a scenic option if you have the time.
