Why Combine Hakone and Mount Fuji in One Trip

Hakone and Mount Fuji sit less than 60 kilometers apart, yet most visitors treat them as separate day trips from Tokyo. That means two round trips, two early mornings, and a lot of wasted time on trains. A smarter approach is to link both areas into a single 1- or 2-day loop, soaking in Hakone's onsen one evening and waking up to chase Fuji views the next morning.

Hakone offers something the Fuji Five Lakes area does not: hot spring towns where you can unwind after a day of sightseeing. Meanwhile, the Fuji side delivers the close-up, lake-reflected views of the mountain that Hakone's more distant vantage points cannot match. Together, they form one of the most rewarding side trips from Tokyo. For a broader overview of what the Fuji area offers, see our complete Mount Fuji travel guide.

Best Hakone Viewpoints for Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is visible from several points across Hakone, though clear sightings depend heavily on weather. Realistically, only about 30% of days offer unobstructed views — winter months give you the best odds.

Owakudani Ropeway Station

Owakudani (大涌谷) is an active volcanic valley reached by the Hakone Ropeway, and it doubles as one of the area's top Fuji viewpoints. On clear days, the snow-capped peak rises behind the sulfurous steam vents, making for a dramatic contrast. The ropeway operates from 9:00 to 17:00, with a one-way fare of ¥1,500 (~$10) that is covered by the Hakone Freepass. No reservation is needed.

While you are there, try the famous black eggs (kuro-tamago) boiled in volcanic water — local legend says each one adds seven years to your life.

Lake Ashi South Shore and Moto-Hakone

Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖) is a caldera lake where pirate ship cruises run between Togendai, Hakone-machi, and Moto-Hakone. The south shore near the red torii gate of Hakone Shrine offers a classic composition: Fuji framed above the gate and across the water. Early morning, before the cruise crowds arrive, is the calmest time for photos.

Hakone Turnpike and Roadside Lookouts

Drivers along the Hakone Turnpike (a toll road running south of Owakudani) pass several roadside lookouts with sweeping Fuji panoramas. These spots are less crowded than Owakudani but require a car. The turnpike toll is approximately ¥730 (~$5) for passenger vehicles.

How to Get from Hakone to the Fuji Five Lakes

There is no direct train between Hakone and the Fuji Five Lakes. All public transport routes pass through Gotemba (御殿場), a transfer town at the eastern base of Mount Fuji. The total journey takes roughly 2 hours by bus, plus waiting time at Gotemba.

Hakone to Gotemba by Bus (50 Minutes)

The Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus runs from Hakone-Yumoto (箱根湯本) to Gotemba Station in about 50 minutes. The fare is ¥1,500 (~$10) one-way, payable by IC card or cash. Buses depart approximately every hour, with the first bus at 7:00 and the last around 18:30. The Hakone Freepass does not cover this route.

Gotemba to Kawaguchiko by Fujikyu Bus (60 Minutes)

From Gotemba Station, the Fujikyu Highway Bus continues to Kawaguchiko Station (河口湖駅) in about 60 minutes. The adult fare is ¥1,750 (~$12) one-way. Buses run every 1 to 2 hours. Sit on the right side of the bus for impressive Fuji views along the way.

For JR rail options to Mount Fuji from other cities, a separate route via Mishima or Shin-Fuji stations may be faster depending on your starting point.

Driving Route via Route 138

If you have a rental car, the drive from Hakone to Kawaguchiko takes about 1.5 hours via Route 138 through Gotemba. Parking at Fuji viewpoints typically costs around ¥1,000 (~$7) per day. Driving is the most flexible option and eliminates the Gotemba transfer wait.

Route Time Cost (one-way) Notes
Hakone → Gotemba (bus) 50 min ¥1,500 (~$10) Departs Hakone-Yumoto
Gotemba → Kawaguchiko (bus) 60 min ¥1,750 (~$12) Departs Gotemba Stn
Total by bus ~2 hrs + transfer ¥3,250 (~$22) No direct service
By car (Route 138) ~1.5 hrs Fuel + ¥1,000 parking Most flexible

Sample Itineraries: 1-Day and 2-Day Plans

1-Day: Hakone Loop with Fuji Views

This itinerary works if you only want Hakone and distant Fuji views, without crossing to the Five Lakes.

  • Morning: Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (85 min, ¥2,470 / ~$17)
  • Mid-morning: Hakone Tozan Train to Gora (40 min), cable car to Sounzan (10 min), ropeway to Owakudani (views and black eggs)
  • Afternoon: Ropeway to Togendai, pirate ship across Lake Ashi to Moto-Hakone, Hakone Shrine torii gate
  • Evening: Bus back to Hakone-Yumoto, Romancecar to Tokyo

The Hakone Freepass (箱根フリーキップ) at ¥6,100 (~$41) for 2 days covers the Romancecar supplement and all local transport within Hakone. Even on a 1-day trip, it is cheaper than buying individual tickets.

If you would rather head to Fuji directly from Tokyo, our day trip from Tokyo to Mount Fuji guide covers faster routes.

2-Day: Hakone Onsen Night + Fuji Five Lakes Day Trip

This is the recommended approach for travelers who want both the onsen experience and close-up Fuji views.

  • Day 1: Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto. Complete the Hakone loop (train, cable car, ropeway, pirate ship). Check into a ryokan or onsen hotel. Spend the evening soaking.
  • Day 2: Early bus from Hakone-Yumoto to Gotemba (7:00 departure, 50 min). Transfer to Kawaguchiko bus (60 min). Explore the lakefront, ride the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (¥900 / ~$6 round trip, 9:00–17:00). Return to Tokyo via Fujikyu Rail or highway bus.

Hakone Onsen Stays with Fuji Views

Hakone-Yumoto Area

Hakone-Yumoto (箱根湯本) is the gateway town with the most accommodation options and the easiest station access. The main onsen street has day-use baths from around ¥1,500 (~$10) and ryokan stays starting at ¥15,000 (~$100) per person with dinner and breakfast included. This area is ideal if you plan to catch the early morning bus to Gotemba the next day.

Gora and Sounzan Area

Staying in Gora puts you closer to the ropeway starting point, which saves time on day 2 if you want to revisit Owakudani in the morning before heading to Fuji. Gora has several upscale ryokan and boutique hotels, generally starting around ¥25,000 (~$170) per person. The trade-off is fewer budget options and a slightly longer bus ride to Gotemba.

When to Go for the Clearest Fuji Views

Mount Fuji visibility from Hakone varies dramatically by season. Winter offers the clearest skies but the coldest temperatures. Summer is warm but hazy — Fuji often hides behind clouds for days at a time.

Season Fuji Visibility Hakone Conditions Notes
Dec–Feb High (best odds) Cold, some snow Onsen season; fewer tourists
Mar–Apr Moderate Cherry blossom season Crowds increase mid-March
May–Jun Low to moderate Rainy season (tsuyu) from mid-June Lush greenery
Jul–Aug Low Hot and humid Fuji climbing season open
Sep–Nov Moderate to high Pleasant temperatures Oct–Nov ideal for combining both

Before heading to Owakudani or Lake Ashi specifically for Fuji views, check the weather forecast on Tenki.jp for Hakone. If the forecast shows clouds, consider rearranging your itinerary to prioritize the onsen and museums instead.

Note that the Fuji 5th Station road closes from December to April, so winter visitors can view the mountain but cannot drive up it. Prices shown in this article are from 2025 sources; check official sites for the latest rates.
