Kiyosato Terrace: Mountain Views, Cafes & Highland Escape in Yamanashi

6 min read

What Is Kiyosato Terrace

Kiyosato Terrace (清里テラス) is an observation deck at 1,900 meters elevation in the Yatsugatake highlands of northern Yamanashi Prefecture. Reached by a 10-minute panoramic lift ride from Sun Meadows Kiyosato resort, it offers sweeping views of Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, and the Nobeyama Highland — all from oversized sofa seats with a highland cafe serving drinks and snacks.

This is not a traditional viewpoint with a railing and a sign. Kiyosato Terrace is designed for lingering — large circular sofas and cushioned seating areas face the panorama, encouraging visitors to sit, order a drink, and absorb the landscape. The concept is closer to a rooftop lounge than a mountain lookout. For other Yamanashi accommodation and destination options, see our hub guide.

The terrace operates seasonally, approximately late April through early November. Outside the green season, Sun Meadows operates as a ski resort. Weather closures are common at this elevation — check the official site before visiting.

The View from 1,900 Meters: What You See

On clear days, the panorama from Kiyosato Terrace includes:

  • Mt. Fuji to the south — the iconic cone rises above the lower ridgelines
  • Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains) to the southwest — a wall of 3,000-meter peaks
  • Nobeyama Highland below — Japan's highest JR station area and open grasslands
  • Yatsugatake range behind you — the mountain chain that the terrace sits on

According to the Yamanashi Prefecture tourism site, the vivid deep blue sky characteristic of this area is called "Yatsugatake Blue" (八ヶ岳ブルー) — a term locals use to describe the intense color that comes with the high altitude and dry highland air.

Visibility is best in autumn and winter. Summer mornings can be clear, but afternoon haze often obscures distant peaks. If you are visiting primarily for the Fuji view, arrive early and hope for clear weather.

Highland Cafe and Sofa Seats

The terrace features a cafe serving drinks and light snacks — hot cocoa, soft-serve ice cream, and seasonal beverages are popular choices. The seating areas include the signature oversized sofas that have become the terrace's most photographed feature. These are first-come, first-served; on busy summer weekends, there can be a wait.

Many TripAdvisor reviewers specifically recommend the ice cream and hot cocoa as highlights worth ordering. The cafe operates during lift hours only.

Beyond the terrace itself, the Sun Meadows base area has an athletic park, walking trails, and family-oriented activities during the green season. The terrace is the main draw, but families with children can easily spend a half day exploring the broader resort area.

Best Season and When to Visit

Summer: Cool Highland Escape

At 1,900 meters, Kiyosato Terrace is significantly cooler than the lowlands — temperatures rarely exceed 25°C even in August, making it a popular summer retreat from Tokyo's heat. According to the Sun Meadows official site, the terrace and lift operate from approximately 9:30 to 16:30 during the green season.

Summer is the busiest period. Weekends in July and August see long lift queues and full sofa seating. Visit on a weekday or arrive at opening for the best experience.

Autumn: Foliage and Clear Skies

October through early November brings autumn foliage to the highlands, with clear skies that produce the best Mt. Fuji visibility of the year. The combination of fall colors below and blue sky above makes autumn the most photogenic season.

The terrace typically closes for the season in early November.

Winter: Ski Season Only

In winter, Sun Meadows operates as a ski resort. The terrace itself does not operate during ski season — winter visitors come for skiing and snowboarding rather than the observation deck.

Getting to Kiyosato Terrace from Tokyo

By Car via Chuo Expressway

Driving from Tokyo takes approximately 2 hours via the Chuo Expressway. Exit at Nagasaka IC, then drive approximately 20 minutes to the Sun Meadows base. Free parking is available at the resort.

This is the most practical option, especially for families or groups. The drive through the Yatsugatake foothills is scenic, and having a car allows you to combine Kiyosato Terrace with other highland stops.

By Train: JR Koumi Line to Kiyosato Station

From Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line limited express (Azusa) to Kobuchizawa Station, then transfer to the JR Koumi Line to Kiyosato Station. The total journey takes approximately 2.5 hours.

From Kiyosato Station, Sun Meadows is about 7 minutes by car. There is no regular shuttle bus — you will need a taxi or a pickup arrangement with your accommodation. This is the main limitation of train access.
