Nara on the Map: Where It Fits in the Kansai Triangle

Nara sits in a geographic sweet spot — southeast of Osaka and directly south of Kyoto, forming what frequent Kansai travelers call the "golden triangle." The three cities are connected by direct trains with journey times under 50 minutes between any pair. This positioning makes Nara one of the easiest day trips in Japan, whether you base yourself in Osaka or Kyoto.

Nara Prefecture covers 3,691 square kilometers, but the area that matters for most visitors is remarkably compact: a cluster of temples, a park full of sacred deer, and a preserved merchant quarter, all within about 2.5 kilometers of Kintetsu Nara Station. Understanding this layout — and which station to use — is the key to navigating Nara efficiently. For Nara's location in Japan explained in broader context, see our dedicated page.

Nara at a Glance: Key Areas and Distances

Area Distance from Kintetsu Nara Station Character
Nara Park (deer) 10-minute walk Free, open 24 hours, 1,200+ deer
Todai-ji (Great Buddha) 15-20 minute walk Iconic temple, ¥600 entry
Kasuga Taisha 20-25 minute walk Shrine with stone lanterns
Kofuku-ji 5-minute walk Five-story pagoda, central
Naramachi 10-15 minute walk south Traditional merchant quarter
JR Nara Station 15-minute walk west Secondary station

The tourist core is remarkably walkable. You can visit Nara Park, Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Kofuku-ji, and Naramachi in a single day on foot without any public transport beyond the train that brings you to the city.

Nara Park and the Temple District

From Kintetsu Nara Station to Todai-ji

According to the Nara City Tourism Association, Kintetsu Nara Station is the tourist-preferred station — about 10 minutes on foot to Nara Park and 15-20 minutes to Todai-ji (東大寺), home of the Great Buddha. The walk from the station passes through a pleasant shopping street before opening into the park with its free-roaming deer.

Nara Park itself is free and open 24 hours. The deer are most active during daytime. Deer crackers (鹿せんべい, shika senbei) cost ¥200 per pack — the deer know exactly what the crackers look like and will approach you enthusiastically.

Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha Loop

Kofuku-ji (興福寺) and its distinctive five-story pagoda sit closest to Kintetsu Nara Station — just a 5-minute walk. From Kofuku-ji, the natural walking circuit heads east through Nara Park to Todai-ji, then continues southeast to Kasuga Taisha (春日大社), the shrine famous for thousands of stone and bronze lanterns.

This loop — Kofuku-ji → Todai-ji → Kasuga Taisha — takes 2-3 hours at a comfortable pace and covers Nara's three major religious sites in a logical geographic sequence. For a detailed walking route with timings, see our Nara city walking map.

Naramachi: The Merchant Quarter South of the Park

Naramachi (ならまち) is the preserved merchant district south of Kofuku-ji — about 10-15 minutes walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. The area features traditional machiya (町家) wooden townhouses converted into craft shops, cafes, sake bars, and small museums.

Naramachi is quieter and less crowded than the temple district. It suits travelers who enjoy browsing small shops and want a break from the temple-and-deer circuit. Allow 1-2 hours for a relaxed walk through the narrow streets.

Kintetsu vs JR: Which Station to Use

Kintetsu Nara: The Tourist-Friendly Choice

Kintetsu Nara Station (近鉄奈良駅) is the recommended station for most visitors. It sits closer to the tourist core — a 10-minute walk to Nara Park versus 20+ minutes from JR Nara Station.

Route Time Fare
Osaka Namba → Kintetsu Nara ~40 min ¥680 (~$5)
Kyoto Station → Kintetsu Nara ~35 min (limited express) ¥1,280 (~$9)

JR Nara: For Rail Pass Holders

JR Nara Station is further from the sights — about 20 minutes walk to Nara Park, or a short bus ride. It makes sense if you hold a Japan Rail Pass and are coming from Osaka Station via the JR Yamatoji Line.

Route Time Fare
Osaka Station → JR Nara ~50 min ¥1,040 (~$7)
Kyoto Station → JR Nara ~45 min ¥720 (~$5)

Many visitors on Reddit recommend paying the Kintetsu fare even with a JR Pass, simply for the 10 minutes of saved walking. For a deeper analysis of whether to base in Osaka or Kyoto for Nara, see our comparison.

Getting Around Nara: Buses, Walking & Day Pass

Most visitors walk the entire Nara circuit without using any local transport. The key sights are concentrated enough that a bus is not necessary for the standard temple loop.

According to Nara Kotsu, the local bus company, buses run between JR Nara Station and Nara Park area. A day pass costs ¥500 (~$3) and covers unlimited rides within the city zone — useful if you arrive at JR Nara and want to skip the 20-minute walk.

Bus hours are approximately 5:30-22:00. Individual rides cost ¥220-320 depending on distance.

For visitors coming from Tokyo to Nara, the fastest route is Shinkansen to Kyoto, then Kintetsu to Nara — approximately 3.5 hours total.
