Angel Road: Kagawa's Disappearing Sandbar

Angel Road (エンジェルロード) is a 500-meter sandbar on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture that appears from the sea at low tide and vanishes when the water rises. According to the Tonosho Town official site, the path connects the Shodoshima mainland to three small islets — Bentenjima (弁天島), Nakanoshima, and Oku-no-shima — creating a walkable strip of sand with the Seto Inland Sea on both sides.

This is not a beach in the traditional sense. It is a tidal phenomenon: here for a few hours, gone for a few hours, repeating twice daily. The timing depends entirely on the tide schedule, which means planning your visit around the low tide window is essential.

A local legend says that crossing Angel Road hand-in-hand with someone you love will make your wish come true. According to the Shodoshima Tourism Association, this has made Angel Road one of the most popular romantic spots in the Seto Inland Sea — but the tidal spectacle is worth seeing regardless of who you travel with.

Admission is free. No reservation needed.

How the Tidal Sandbar Works

The sandbar emerges as the tide drops, reaching its widest point at the peak of low tide. According to Japan Travel Note, the path is walkable for approximately 2-3 hours around each low tide, appearing once or twice per day depending on tidal patterns.

The critical planning step is checking the exact low tide time for your visit date. The Tonosho Town municipal office publishes an annual tide table specifically for Angel Road — this is the most reliable source. Generic tide apps may not accurately reflect Shodoshima's local tidal patterns.

Promised Hill: The Best Viewpoint

Promised Hill (約束の丘, Yakusoku no Oka) is the observation deck above Angel Road, reached by a short, steep climb from the parking area. According to the Shodoshima Tourism Association, the viewpoint is free and open 24 hours.

From the top, you see the full length of the sandbar stretching across the water — this is where the most iconic Angel Road photographs are taken. The Bell of Happiness (幸せの鐘) sits at the summit, adding to the romantic atmosphere.

Visit the viewpoint before walking the sandbar itself. The bird's-eye perspective gives you a sense of scale that you lose once you are at sea level on the sand.

Getting to Shodoshima and Angel Road

Ferry from Takamatsu to Tonosho Port

The most common route to Shodoshima is by ferry from Takamatsu Port in Kagawa Prefecture. High-speed ferries take approximately 30 minutes and cost roughly ¥1,250 (~$8) one way (2025 pricing — check the operator for current fares). Regular ferries take about 60 minutes and are cheaper, with the added advantage of carrying cars.

Ferries from Okayama also serve Shodoshima via different ports on the island's east side.

From Tonosho Port to Angel Road

Angel Road is a 5-minute drive or approximately 20-minute walk from Tonosho Port (土庄港). Taxis are available at the port. Bicycle rental is another option — Shodoshima is pleasant for cycling in good weather, and bikes are available near the port.

Free parking is available at Angel Road for approximately 100 cars.

Combining Angel Road with Shodoshima Sightseeing

Shodoshima has more to offer than Angel Road alone. If you are visiting for a full day or overnight, consider:

  • Shodoshima Olive Park — Mediterranean-style terraces and olive groves on the island's south coast. Famous for its Greek-style windmill photo spot.
  • Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village — A preserved film set from the 1954 movie, now a nostalgic village of wooden schoolhouses and retro shops on the eastern shore.
  • Kankakei Gorge — One of Japan's three most beautiful gorges, accessible by ropeway. Best in autumn for foliage.

These attractions are spread across the island and require a rental car or bus to reach from Angel Road. Shodoshima is too large to walk between major sites. A full day allows Angel Road plus one or two other attractions comfortably.
