Shikotsu-Toya National Park: Twin Lakes, Volcanoes & Onsen Guide
Two Lakes, Two Experiences: What the Park Offers
Shikotsu-Toya National Park (支笏洞爺国立公園) encompasses two caldera lakes, active volcanoes, and some of Hokkaido's most accessible hot spring towns — all within easy reach of Sapporo and New Chitose Airport. The park covers a vast area of southwestern Hokkaido, but its highlights cluster around two distinct zones that offer completely different experiences.
Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) is the wilderness side — a deep caldera lake with water so clear it glows cobalt blue, surrounded by forested mountains with minimal development. Lake Toya (洞爺湖) is the amenity side — a caldera lake ringed by an onsen town that launches fireworks every night from late April through October, with an active volcano accessible by ropeway.
For many travelers, the park is an easy day trip or overnight from Sapporo. For the broader Hokkaido national park picture, see our Hokkaido national park guide.
Lake Shikotsu: Crystal-Clear Water and Wilderness
Shikotsu Blue and Water Activities
Lake Shikotsu is renowned for its water clarity — the lake has been ranked as Japan's clearest lake multiple times. The phenomenon known as "Shikotsu Blue" refers to the intense cobalt color visible on sunny days, caused by the lake's exceptional depth and minimal sediment.
The lake offers kayaking, canoeing, and clear-bottom boat tours that let you see the underwater landscape. The southern shore has a small visitor center and a handful of accommodations. Compared to Lake Toya, Shikotsu is quieter, less developed, and more nature-focused.
Mount Tarumae: Hiking an Active Volcano
Mount Tarumae (樽前山, 1,041 m) rises on the southern shore of Lake Shikotsu. A short yet thrilling hike from the 7th Station trailhead leads to the crater rim with views directly into the active volcanic dome. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for moderately fit hikers. Best season: July to October.
Lake Toya: Volcanoes, Fireworks, and Onsen Town
Mount Usu Ropeway and Volcanic Trails
Mount Usu (有珠山) is an active volcano on the southern shore of Lake Toya. The ropeway carries you to a summit observation platform with views of the lake, the caldera rim, and the 2000 eruption landscape. The ropeway operates year-round with seasonal schedule variations — check the official website for current hours and fares.
Nightly Fireworks (April–October)
The Toyako Long-Run Fireworks Festival launches fireworks every night at 20:45 for approximately 20 minutes from late April through October. The display is free to watch from anywhere along the lakefront. For detailed Lake Toya coverage, see our Lake Toya things to do guide.
Noboribetsu: Hell Valley and Hot Springs
Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) sits at the park's southern edge and is one of Hokkaido's most famous hot spring towns. Jigokudani (地獄谷, Hell Valley) is a volcanic crater with steaming vents, bubbling pools, and the sharp smell of sulfur — a 10-minute walk from the town center.
The onsen town has public bathhouses and ryokan with multiple bath types — each drawing from different mineral springs. Day-use bathing is available at several hotels.
